  • Same sex marriage

The Bible is a book. It is made of paper and leather and glue and all sorts of other components that comprise the 1% of the thing not covered by the major ingrediants. It was written by men. Never mind Who told these men what to write - between thought and expression lies muscle and bone and the very real chance for misinterpretation, regardless of whether the thought was borne by a minor muse, the Almighty, or a drinking binge.

Same sex couples are people. They are made of the same stuff as any other person. 70% water. 206 bones. 21 grams. These couples are simply asking for the same rights that traditional couples possess, and they are asking that their union be recognized (if the couple wishes) as a marriage. More than that (though it’s not really “more” - it should be a given, an inalienable right), these couples, these individuals, these people want to be recognized as equals.

A good number of people in the United States - perhaps a majority - voted last night to side with a book instead of their fellow man. 10 of 11 states voted against a measure to recognize or allow same-sex marriage, often by a margin of 2 to 1. These very same people used these beliefs to return a man to the White House that, over the past 4 years, has done everything in his power to show observant, aware Americans that he & his administration is woefully unfit to assume the awesome responsibilities of national stewardship.

This morning, at 4 AM, I went to sleep in a country that decided to treasure ill-fitting moral imperatives over important domestic and international issues. Inhibiting the rights of two men or two women in love matters more than a weakended economy, a gluttonous national deficit, an archaic environmental & scientific paradigm, a misbegotten paper tiger foreign policy, an interminable war against a indefatigable concept, and a multitude of other pressing matters that have more to do with how our nation will grow than who someone decides to love or fuck.

There will be plenty of ink and noise over the next few months about a nation divided, with the political moral majority beset on multiple fronts by coastal metropolitan tax-happy liberals. And there will be talk of the necessity that we as a people unite behind our leader in this time of turmoil. After all, it will be said, we are already at war with outside forces; it will only hurt our strength and our resolve if we begin to war with ourselves. The people have spoken, and the 43rd President of the United States will be in that office for another 4 years, and we must recognize and stand behind our President.

Let me clarify my position on this, if only for myself - I will stand behind the office of the President. I will respect the power and the prestige of this title, and I will acknowledge the awesome responsibilities shouldered by the individual that assumes this position, as well as the awesome responsibilities of those working with the President. But I will be dead, buried, and turned to broken bone before I show one iota of respect for this smug, recalcitrant, ignorant President and his equally reprehensible administration. To them, and to their ill-informed constituency, I only have two words, and while it’s a foregone conclusion that this anger and frustration will fade over time, I cannot stress that as of right now, this is the only thing I have to say: fuck you.
